Why Choose MYFA

Home » Why Choose MYFA

At Medina Youth Football, we are proud to partner with Medina Professionals to provide continuous, consistent, positive, instructional football from 5-year-old flag through Varsity Tackle Teams. Our tackle program has enjoyed a rich tradition of excellence in football and cheer for over 40 years! Many of our alumni now have children on our Colts and Mustangs tackle and cheer teams. We are especially proud of the coaches who have come up through our program, gone on to great success in high school and college football and returned to coach for MYFA! It is in that spirit that we invite your child to join the “LEGACY OF CHAMPIONS” at Medina Youth Football.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What makes MYFA the leader in Youth Football Programs?
    • All Volunteer – we are an all volunteer organization. None of our board members receive any pay for their service.
    • Run by board not one person – our program is subject to the oversight of a board of directors and is not subject to the opinion of just one person.
    • No stacked teams – our players are assigned by draft. We do not stack teams to make some who always win and others who have very little chance of winning. This results in more playing time for all and a more fair and exciting season for all.
    • Instructional coaching – we have a veteran coaching staff many of whom have decades of coaching experience with MYFA (25 years, 18 years 13 years and 10 years coaching youth football with MYFA). These coaches are dedicated to one goal – teaching the fundamentals of great football in a safe and fun environment. Our coaches undergo background checks and are certified members of NYSCA (National Alliance for Youth Sports Coaching Association).
    • Championship teams – 100% of eligible MYFA teams went to the semi-final round of playoffs in 2010. Talk about results!!
    • Ongoing Success – countless athletes who have gone through our program and on to successful high school, college and professional sporting careers.
    • Excellence in cheer – Our B squad (8 year olds) and JV took top honors at invitational cheer competition. Our Board truly values these young athletes – they are not just an extra.
    • Streamlined Season – Games are scheduled for 8 consecutive weeks while other leagues play some weekends and have some weekends off. The result is we get 8 games in before the middle of October, so that even with playoffs, we wrap up our season by the beginning of November. Other leagues play well into November, which may conflict with other winter sport opportunities.
  2. What are your age/weight restrictions?
At MYFA, we recognize that recent studies have shown that injuries are more likely to occur when players of differing ages, and therefore skill levels, participate on the same team. Our teams are primarily driven by the player’s birth date with an upper end limit for players who will carry the ball (players who exceed these limits will be designated as “line only” unless they choose to play up to the next level). The upper end limits have not been finalized for the 2011 season, but preliminary limits are –

    • Freshmen (7 & 8 years old as of 8/31/11) – 120 lbs
    • Sophomore (9 years old as of 8/31/11) – 130 lbs
    • Junior Varsity (10 years old as of 8/31/11) – 140lbs
    • Varsity (11 & 12 years old as of 8/31/11 and not in 7th grade) – 150lbs
    • Super Varsity (13 years old as of 8/31/11) – 200lbs

All tackle players are weighed and independently certified before each game.

  3. What about safety?
At MYFA, your child’s safety is of the utmost concern to us. Our tackle coaches pay particular attention to teaching proper body position for blocking and tackling to minimize injuries. Our cheer coaches teach proper mounting and stunting techniques. Our protective equipment is top of the line and care is taken in properly fitting each individual athlete for the season.
  4. Where are your practices and games held?
Our practice fields are at Fred Greenwood Park, which is conveniently located across from AI Root Middle School. Greenwood Park includes a playground and Splash Park to entertain younger siblings during practices and features convenient parking. Our home game field is Bill Dunn Field at Reagan Park.
  5. When do you practice?
Our optional pre-season practice camp is held in mid-July. Practices begin the first week of August with 3 days of conditioning and then are 5 days per week from 6:00 – 8:00 (some coaches have adjusted these times slightly) until school begins. After the start of the school year, practices are generally cut back to 3 or 4 days. Most coaches schedule practice for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
  6. What league do you belong to and who else participates?
MYFA is part of the All Ohio Youth Football League. Participants join or change, but currently participating communities are:

    • Medina
    • Wadsworth
    • Kenmore
    • Coventry
    • Field
    • Barberton
    • Cuyahoga Falls
    • Copley
    • Kent
    • Ravenna
    • Norton
    • Stow
    • Cloverleaf
    • Rittman
    • Black River
  7. Do you have other events?
Yes! At MYFA, our board, team moms, coaches and parents organize a wide variety of opportunities to promote team unity. In 2010, we had an All League Kick Off Party, Preview Day, Cleveland Browns Day (our league was recognized by the NFL and invited our players to participate on the field during the national anthem and were then given complimentary tickets for players and a parent for the game). Tail Gate Parties and Pep Rallies, Chili Cook-off, Golf Outing, and Night at the Races. We capped off our season with an All League Banquet and Award Ceremony including hayrides and bonfires as well as a pot luck dinner.
  8. How can I tell if my child is ready?
Desire is the best indicator of success in tackle football. The preseason is typically rigorous and will require commitment on the part of the athlete and family. Flag players who show aggressiveness and drive are great candidates for tackle. If you have a question, speak with your child’s flag coach or come to one of MYFA’s in-person sign-ups and speak with one of our coaches (we’ll be at All Sport Sign-up at the MCRC this winter).
  9. Is financial assistance available?
Yes. We are proud to offer the opportunity to learn and grow to all interested athletes regardless of their ability to pay. We also honor our active military by offering full scholarships to their children. In 2010, our league sponsored 25 athletes!
  10. I would like to coach, whom do I contact?
E-mail one of our Team Directors:
